How to Handle "Just Browsing" on a Sales Call
Why prospects say this
"Just looking" is a shield, not a status. Behind it sits either genuine early research or a polite no. Pushing a browser to buy fails. But one good question separates the two in seconds — and researchers who get a straight answer remember who gave it.
3 responses that actually work
Response 1 — Honor it, then ask:
Prospect: "I am just researching options right now."
You: "No pressure at all — happy to point you the right way even if it is not us. What triggered the research now versus last quarter?"
Why it works: You disarm the shield by accepting it, then ask the timing question that reveals urgency. Researchers answer it. Polite noes deflect twice — and then you know.
Response 2 — Offer the shortcut:
Prospect: "We are too early, just looking around."
You: "Makes sense. Want the 2-minute version so your research goes faster? If it is irrelevant, we are done."
Why it works: You position yourself as a shortcut, not a seller. Early buyers remember who respected their stage.
Response 3 — Qualify the exit:
Prospect: "Yeah, just browsing really."
You: "Totally fine. Last question so I do not bug you later — is there any world where this becomes a priority this quarter?"
Why it works: A clean no beats a zombie maybe. This question either revives the thread or frees your pipeline honestly.

Reading responses helps. Saying them against an AI buyer who plays hard-to-get builds the muscle. Try it free.
