How to Handle "How Much Does This Cost?" on a Sales Call

Why prospects say this

Price is rarely about the number. When a prospect says "that's too expensive," they're usually saying one of three things: they don't understand the value yet, they're comparing you to a cheaper option they don't fully trust, or they have a budget constraint you haven't explored. Your job isn't to defend the price — it's to uncover which one it is.

The wrong way to respond

"But we're actually cheaper than [competitor] when you factor in everything."

Why it fails: You just validated that price is the conversation. Now it's a race to the bottom, and you're fighting on their terms.

"Let me see if I can get you a discount."

Why it fails: You just told them your price was made up. You've trained them that pushing back gets a better deal, and you've erased your own value in one sentence.

3 responses that actually work

Response 1 — Uncover the real objection:

Prospect: "That's more than we were expecting."

You: "I hear that. Help me understand — is it that the number feels high on its own, or that you're not seeing how it fits into your current budget?"

Why it works: You separate sticker shock from actual budget constraint. Most prospects can't tell you which one they're feeling, and the question makes them think.

Response 2 — Anchor to outcome:

Prospect: "We can't justify that kind of spend right now."

You: "Totally fair. What would need to be true for this to feel like a no-brainer investment six months from now?"

Why it works: You shift from cost to ROI. You're not arguing about money — you're asking them to define value on their own terms. Once they do, the price either fits or it doesn't, and you both know why.

Response 3 — Reframe the comparison:

Prospect: "We're paying half that with our current solution."

You: "That makes sense. What's the cost of the things your current solution isn't solving?"

Why it works: You're not competing on price. You're competing on the gap. Every tool they already pay for has a blind spot — make them name it.

Practice handling price objections out loud

Reading responses helps. Saying them out loud against an AI buyer who pushes back is what actually builds muscle memory. Try it once — it's free.
