How to Handle "We're Already Using Something Else" on a Sales Call

Why prospects say this

This objection sounds like a door slamming shut, but it's rarely final. Most of the time, "we already use X" means one of two things: they don't want to have the conversation right now, or they associate "switching" with weeks of pain and zero upside. Your job isn't to trash their current tool — it's to make them curious enough to let you ask one question.

The wrong way to respond

"We're way better than them. They don't even have [your feature]."

Why it fails: You just insulted a decision they probably made. Now they're defending their past choice instead of listening to you.

"Okay, well if anything changes, let me know."

Why it fails: You accepted the brush-off. You didn't earn another conversation. You just made it easier for them to forget you exist.

3 responses that actually work

Response 1 — Show respect, then open the door:

Prospect: "We're already using Salesforce."

You: "Salesforce is solid. What made you choose them originally?"

Why it works: You validated their decision first. People want to talk about choices they're proud of. Their answer tells you what they value — and often reveals what Salesforce isn't doing for them anymore.

Response 2 — Find the gap without attacking the tool:

Prospect: "We're happy with what we have."

You: "That's great — most teams I talk to are happy with part of their stack. What's the one thing you wish it did better?"

Why it works: You're not saying their tool is bad. You're asking a question that every user of every tool can answer. Nobody loves everything about their software.

Response 3 — Make switching feel safe:

Prospect: "It's not worth the hassle of switching."

You: "Completely understand. If we could prove this takes less than a week to get up and running and your team actually prefers it, would it be worth a 20-minute call?"

Why it works: You acknowledged the switching cost, gave a specific timeframe, and made the ask small. You're not asking them to switch — you're asking for 20 minutes.
